ORA-08467: error converting Oracle number to string

What triggered the Error:

An error occurred when converting an Oracle number to a COBOL of: DISPLAY COMP-3 or character variable. The Oracle number was not in the correct format.

What should we do to fix it:

Correct the call to the conversion routine. The input must be a valid Oracle number variable.
